Excluding Livestock Livelihoods in Refugee Responses: A Risk to Public Health

Abstract The Syrian civil war caused a near total collapse of its health and veterinary infrastructure, affecting vaccinations, quarantine border control. While outbreaks zoonoses—diseases transmissible between animals humans—in neighbouring countries are attributed to irregular cross-border movements, little remains known about the impact conflict displacement on livestock, zoonotic disease risks in refugee host populations. This case study investigates role livestock dynamics context Jordan, inform policies procedures for better inclusion responses. Key informant interviews were conducted with humanitarian, animal public experts, household Jordanian keepers Mafraq Governorate. Respondents smuggling no reports refugees bringing into Jordan. respondents diversify their livelihoods through husbandry, high-level political practical barriers affect refugees’ access assistance, increasing risks.
